About the Kanakdhara Strotam
The story goes that Shankaracharya went out seeking bhiksha and came upon the home of a poor Brahmin woman. The woman did not have anything at home, but she did not want to turn away the saint empty-handed. She searched desperately and finally found a single amla fruit (Indian gooseberry). With trembling hands, she gave the fruit to Shankaracharya.
He realized that although she did not have much, she was a woman of tremendous kindness and devotion. He immediately began singing the praises of Goddess Lakshmi and beseeched her to help the old woman. Goddess lakshmi appeared before him and stated that since the woman had not been charitable in her past life, according to the laws of karma, she was destined to remain poor in this life.
Shankaracharya replied that the woman’s charitable act and selfless nature in her present life should absolve her of her past karma, and that Goddess Mahalakshmi was the only one who could rewrite her fate and absolve her of her previous sins. Upon hearing this, goddess Lakshmi was pleased and showered amlas made of solid gold on the lady’s house.
