Triyuginarayan Temple, Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand
Triyuginarayan Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is a historic and sacred site located in Triyuginarayan village of Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. This ancient pilgrimage spot lies on the route from Guttur to Shri Kedarnath, and its architectural style is said to have influenced the design of the Kedarnath Temple. The village holds great religious importance, as scriptures describe Triyuginarayan as the ancient capital of Himavat, and it is here that the holy marriage of Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati took place.
It is believed that their wedding was performed at a large havan kund (sacred fire pit) where fire was lit in all four directions. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and many other deities and sages were present at this divine ceremony. Even today, devotees take the sacred ash from this havan kund to their homes, considering it a blessing for a happy married life. The temple is called “Triyuginarayan” because it is said to hold signs from three yugas (ages), symbolizing the eternal bond of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Maa Parvati.
The temple complex also has four important kunds: Rudra Kund, Vishnu Kund, Brahma Kund, and Saraswati Kund. The waters of these kunds are considered highly sacred, and it is believed that the gods bathed in them during the wedding of Shiva and Parvati. Among them, Saraswati Kund is especially revered, as its water is believed to have originated from the navel of Lord Vishnu, giving it even greater spiritual significance.
